What Makes You Happy: “Free From Bitterness”
    Scripture:  Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32

Happy people are at peace with others and with themselves. A big part of this is learning to live free of bitterness; refusing to get back at someone, refusing to hold grudges, and willing to put away bitterness. The key to all of this is the practice of forgiveness.

What Makes You Happy: “Filling the Gap”
    Scripture:  1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Ephesians 5:21
One of the key practices when it comes to peace with one another is being relationally generous to one another. When there is a gap between our expectations and someone’s behavior, we fill that gap by believing the best.

What Makes You Happy: “Peace with God”
    Scripture:  Romans 5:1-2a, 6-8

Happy people have peace with God and know that they have peace with God. We experience that peace by 1) living into the truth that we are made right with God through grace rather than our behavior, and 2) by repenting and living into God's will.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Perfect Love Casts Out Fear”
    Scripture:  1 John 4:17-18

Fear is based on a failure to believe the gospel.  Is God in control or not?  Is Jesus risen and now sitting on the throne or not?  Has he saved us from our sins?  Christians have no reason to fear what other people think of us, no reason to fear losing our jobs, or even losing our lives, because we're secure in the gospel.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Holding God’s Lamp to my Chest”
    Scripture:  Psalm 42

How do we live by the gospel when we are overtaken by this darkness that is bigger than ourselves?  The best thing for us to do during the storms of life is to look at the God who is in control of it all.

At the Foot of the Cross: “Sailing Rather than Rowing”
    Scripture:  Galatians 5:16-25

So if we're saved by grace and not by what we do, why is there so much emphasis on how we live?  That's because living a Christian life is more like sailing a boat than rowing a boat.  We have work to do, but it is the wind (God) that propels the boat forward.
