Paul makes his final appeal to trust in Christ rather than any achievement or status. Real Christianity is a matter of inward change, not external observance, and the gospel is offensive because the cross stands against all schemes of self-salvation.

 

A sign that we are truly trusting in Christ is whether or not we are boasting in Jesus. The heart of what we trust in and what we worship is shown in what we boast about. Asking ourselves “what do I boast about?” is a way of monitoring what  or who we’re really trusting in.
